Neighbor's in the nude to garden
Dear Abby: Q: I am 76, my wife is 65. Our neighbor "Roy" is retired, but probably less than 60 years old. The fence between Roy's property and ours is 6 feet tall, but the wood has shrunk and there are gaps of about half an inch or more between the boards. Abby, Roy likes to work nude in his backyard and has told my wife he does this. More...

When no nudes is bad news
Tourists are desperate for a nude beach in Tasmania, says a group of nudists. The Southern Tasmanian Association of Nudists says it fields several calls a week from visitors keen to shed their clothes. The association is pushing for the state's first nude beach this summer, to satisfy both local nudists and visitors. The association's president, who wanted to be identified only as Kevin, said Tasmania was the only state in Australia without a nude beach. More...

Nude Night Hike
Oh, that I wish the trail had been as illuminated as when the picture was taken. I try to avoid hiking in the dark, even though I have a great hiking headlamp that clearly shows the trail in front of me . . . or in whatever direction I'm am looking. More...

Naked Ramblers and the Freedom to be Yourself campaign
Steve Gough's desire to walk in the nude from Land's End to John O'Groats made him a national hero. Jonathan Brown (suitably attired) joined his Freedom to be Yourself campaign. It bore all the hallmarks of the classic anxiety dream, but it was for real. I am walking along a deserted woodland track, stark naked, when a convoy of vehicles trundles into view ahead, packed with people. There is no time to run. Ridicule and humiliation feel harrowingly imminent.  More...

Right wing having an art attack over nude sculpture
The caped crusaders for the conservative cause are on the rampage again. This time, the target of their moral misfire is a piece of Seattle public art that hasn't even seen the light of day yet. You've got to hand it to conservatives. They have an uncanny way of seeing the unforeseen. They already know that an installment of sculpture art coming to the city's waterfront is offensive, debased and sexually perverse. More...

Salt Furniture
This building is not as luxurious as I thought it would be. The vent in the elevator is coughing. No one is at the desk. [Silvia] When we moved in, it looked like a frat house, broken tiles. [Evan] Asphalt roof. Our first question was, How strange is this? [Silvia] The owner lives in Israel. [Evan] He comes once a month. At first I thought you lived in the Milburn Hotel nearby. [Silvia] There's a nudist colony on top. Are they all always nude? [ Evan] They're regularly partially nude.  More...

Naked pensioners make their point
"It is not something I normally do - parade around Brighton in my skiddies." Gordon Dodd says his friends and family were a little surprised when he announced he was planning to stage a naked protest at the Labour party conference. But it was the only way Mr Dodd and his eight friends could think of to make Chancellor Gordon Brown, making a keynote speech in the hall opposite, take notice of their plight.  More...

Going Topless
Main street values and naturist attitudes collided in the small Cayuga County village of Moravia when four women tossed their tops outside of the Modern M Market. "A customer came in and said, what is this a free show," Modern M Market cashier Katie Steward explained.  Madeleine McPherson of Rochester, Barb Crumb and Carol Clark of Bridgeport and Claudia Kellersch of San Diego, Calif. weren't part of any show. However, they have become the talk of the village since they bared their breasts last month. More...

Case dismissed for naked protestor
The protestor who stripped down in Washington Square Park, with the words "Stop the War" painted all over her body, had her case of "public indecency" thrown out by a judge. Also contributing to the situation: Neither the arresting officer nor someone from the DA's office was present. D'oh! Or perhaps that was their passive-aggressive way of realizing the charges were dumb.  More...

Principal Chases Streaker in Gorilla Mask
Some may have called it monkeying around, but school officials didn't find the stunt amusing. A 17-year-old student was arrested Monday after streaking through his high school wearing only a gorilla mask and outrunning the school principal. Union Springs High School Principal Kimberle Ward — who said she runs three to five miles a day — couldn't catch the fleeing student, but she was able to help police identify the teen after watching a hallway surveillance camera video and interviewing students.  More...

France bares all for sake of art
Almost 1,500 men and women have stripped naked in the name of art in the French city of Lyon. The volunteers gathered before dawn to join the latest nude photo shoot by New York artist Spencer Tunick. Directed by the artist from a crane, they posed with arms and legs in the air between shipping containers in Lyon's port, and on a waterfront.  More...

Should nude photographs be considered art or pornography?
"Nude photography is, in my opinion, pornography. From a moral point of view, I think that the naked human body, portrayed in a photograph, incites lust -- which is condemned expressly in the Bible (I John 2:16). The human body is beautiful; it is a work of art in its own right. But the body does not need to be displayed nude to show its magnificence. More...

Nudists to stand for parliament
A new political party for nudists hopes to change the law to give women the same rights as men to go topless in public. It also wants to increase the number of nude beaches and create a number of parks specifically for nudists. The Naturist Lifestyle Party plans to stand candidates for the NSW Upper House at the 2007 state election. Founder and prospective MP Sylvia Else believes nudists have to band together to become a political force to get a fairer share of public resources. More...

Nude Nite returns
For the uninitiated, Nude Nite must sound like something hosted by the sort of gentlemen's establishments rarely covered by this publication. And although that sounds like fun, Nude Nite, in reality, is a three-day downtown art happening combining paintings, sculptures and videos that celebrate the human body au naturel. There's also a healthy dose of performances, charitable donations and body painting. More...

Marijuana, hula hoops, nudity at 9-11 anniversary peace rally
Debbie Moore danced nude with thousands of undulating anti-war protesters during a marijuana mellowed "Power to the Peaceful" festival on the eve of the Sept. 11 attacks. Dreadlocks and Birkenstocks along with stilt walkers and pot brownie hawkers were rife in the throng that packed a meadow in Golden Gate Park on Saturday for a combined outdoor concert and anti-establishment demonstration. The official theme of the event was "Bring them home now," a reference to the US soldiers in Iraq. More...

Gardening buff
Bill Schroer doesn't wear blue jeans and work shoes when he works in his garden. He doesn't wear gloves or a hat. In fact, Schroer wears nothing at all. And the 56-year-old likes to encourage the rest of us to become nude gardeners, too. Schroer, you see, is a confirmed, enthusiastic "naturist" who has decided, with his fellow members of the board of the Naturist Action Committee, that nudism no longer should be kept low profile. The naked truth
In regards to your (opinion) about the "octogenarian nudist who found himself in jail" (Doug McMurdo, "Recap of stories that never made the news, PVT Sept. 2) as a naturist for 15 years I can assure you that this man is in no way a nudist. He is nothing short of an exhibitionist, perhaps fetishist, who likes showing his genitals to women and children. More...

Naked Rambler jailed for two weeks
Stephen Gough, the naked rambler, was jailed for two weeks today at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for causing a breach of the peace. Sheriff Kenneth MacIver ruled that Gough, 46, had caused "fear and alarm" as he and his girlfriend, 34 year-old Melanie Roberts, walked along the A701 at Roslin, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, on 1 September. Kaiser Chiefs and Mylo Upset Nudists
British rockers Kaiser Chiefs and dance star Mylo upset Spanish nudists on a recent trip to Ibiza, when they drunkenly gatecrashed their beach but refused to take their shorts off. Mylo says, "I was DJing in the bar when (Kaiser Chiefs) all came in and started dancing on the bar and drinking champagne. More...

Nude bathing revolution for Queensland?
Queensland could soon have its first legal nude beach, right here in the Wide Bay. The Burnett Shire Council is preparing to take a proposal to the State Government to declare Queensland's first "free clothing" beach. There are about 20 legal nude beaches in Australia, but none in Queensland – the last state to have restrictions on naked bathing. The council says it's responding to demand from locals and tourists keen to sun worship at the seaside. More...

Property developer Ian Pollard, 60, and his 53-year-old wife Barbara - a former model - threw off their clothes and threw open the five-acre gardens at their historic home, Abbey House in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Earlier this year the Pollards appeared in an ITV documentary on people who go to work in the nude. More...

Nude play to bare all at Wangaratta
Naked actors will stage the play Skin Tight at the Wangaratta Town Hall this month. Promoters describe the production as “sensitive, sensual and moving” and a brochure carries a warning of male and female nudity. The play will be staged on September 21, a week after the Town Hall hosts the opera Carmen with conductor Richard Gill and Ozopera company. Actors Stuart Halusz and Karen Roberts are performing Skin Tight in the Perth Theatre Companys production this week, with most shows reportedly sold out.  More...

Prudishness is one thing; censorship quite another
Europe's light and easygoing approach to sex and nudity can provide some shocking moments for U.S. travelers: • On a recent trip, my wife and I had to take the TV out of our children's hotel room, as the porn stations were free and available, going at it right there between Euro-sports and MTV. • In Munich, workers take a summer lunch break in their Central Park. They lay out a blanket, fold their power suits neatly, and sunbathe fully nude, oblivious to wide-eyed American tourists passing by. More...

Many people leave Burning Man with a new notion of community after a revelatory week
The Man has burned, the camps are coming down and the RVs are rolling out. After more than a week in the desert, the 35,000 or so who gathered in this sprawling city beneath the sun are heading home, tired and dusty and reflecting on their time on the playa. For some, it was a week to party like never before. For others, it was a time to view artwork so massive, or outlandish, that it simply can't be shown anywhere else.  More...

Looking at Jocks: Nude Athletes Are Fine, Just Not in America
What is it about the athletic body that fascinates so many people? Since the dawn of athletics, nudity has played a part in competition and training, as well as the representation of the athletic body through art. But in American athletics – officially, at least – nudity is the last thing fans can expect. Even the relatively innocuous 2004 Olympics received complaints about the content and implied (although not actual) nudity of the Athens Olympics Opening Ceremonies.  More...

Growing number going to nude beaches and campgrounds in the Maritimes
Atlantic Canada is a region known for chilly nights and foggy mornings but, despite the goose-bumps, it's becoming a popular destination for nudists. Secluded beaches and a number of new, nude-only resorts make the area an ideal place for naturists to doff their duds on a summer day. "The basic, fundamental reason people want to be naturists is because it feels great," said Stephane Deschenes, president of the Federation of Canadian Naturists. More...

Naked rambler denies breach of the peace
Naked rambler Stephen Gough appeared in the nude in court today as he denied committing a breach of the peace while on his marathon walk the length of Britain. The 46-year-old former marine and his girlfriend Melanie Roberts, 34, both from Bournemouth, were arrested yesterday as they approached the outskirts of Edinburgh on the A701. Roberts, who appeared separately wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of breach of the peace and will be sentenced in six months. More...

Camp offers nude recreation in Newberry Springs
Call it a club, call it a camp, just don't call it a colony. The folks at the Silver Valley Sun Club take offense at their RV park in Newberry Springs being referred to as a nudist colony. "Ants and lepers live in colonies," club owner Nancy Dulle said. "We are a nudist camp, or a clothing-optional camp." The Sun Club offers recreational and social activities year-round in an environment where being naked is the norm. More...

Lady Godiva on two wheels
Jill Feeley, 25, who went topless while wearing an American flag as a miniskirt at Columbus Circle on Sun. Aug. 14 with 10 other women bicycle riders, said she was grateful police saved them from a bunch of excited men who rushed the group at 4:30 p.m. There were no arrests. However, Feeley’s lawyer, Jeffrey Rothman, said Feeley would sue the city for arresting her on Aug. 4 during a topless appearance on Delancey St. In the Aug. 4 incident, she was held for 12 hours before being released with no charges filed. You can leave your hat on
A man squirts a puddle of suntan lotion, rubs his palms together and goes to work on the Rubenesque calves of the 50-something blond. Her face goes all dreamy as the suntanned hands of this 30-something Javier, Marco or Philippe knead that soft spot behind the knee. Magic fingers inch up the fleshy thigh that jiggles, wiggles and squiggles. He reaches the border where the bathing suit should be, but there's no bathing suit. More...

Clothing optional when beating heat
To me, the outdoors involves weather. We often complain that it is too cold or too hot, not the optimum “just right” made famous by that little darling, Goldilocks. But one of the simple pleasures of life is enjoying each day of each season for what it presents to us. Our modern society has become accustomed to a static temperature, usually in the range of 72 to 78 degrees. More...

San Luis Obispo council could keep, limit or trash city's anti-nudity law
A controversial anti-nudity ordinance passed after the 2004 Mardi Gras riots could come off the books Tuesday when the San Luis Obispo City Council reviews it. Some council members have raised questions about the ordinance, passed at the urging of police who said flashing contributed to riotous behavior during last year's Mardi Gras celebration. Under the ordinance, flashers face a $100 fine. Council members could opt to keep the law as it is now, scrap it or limit it to the rowdy Mardi Gras season. More...

It's one way to get exposure
Going to the next Chamber mixer? You might be surprised by what you see. Or rather what you don't. The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly after-work mixer in September at Sunny Rest Resort, a clothing-optional camp and recreation area in Carbon County. Chamber members attending the event will be dressed, but they may encounter nudists by the pool, where the mixer will be held. That possibility is causing giggles from one end of the Valley to the other. More...

Two victims were paid nudists on cruise
The passengers on a sailing boat that sank near Queensland's Hinchinbrook Island on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of two people, were paying customers on a naked cruise taken during their stay at a nearby nudist retreat. Cruise skipper and 46-year-old father of five John Arcidiacono, who with wife Jenny operated the Murrigal Nudist Retreat near Tully in the far north of the state, drowned while trying to swim to nearby Garden Island.  More...
