Skin games
If nudism had a national sport -- besides sunbathing, of course -- it would be volleyball, especially water volleyball. The Caliente Resort & Spa north of Tampa offers not one but two swimming pools set up just for volleyball. Both feature regulation nets and scorecards, along with fencing to catch stray balls. Players filled both pools at last weekend's annual convention of the American Association for Nude Recreation. Guests also competed in petanque and tennis, even under the harsh glare of a midday sun. Anti-nudity ban will remain in SLO during Mardi Gras
Flashing during Mardi Gras can still result in a citation, the San Luis Obispo City Council decided Tuesday night. The anti-nudity rule passed following the 2004 Mardi Gras riots, when nearly 200 people were arrested from gathering crowds on Foothill and California boulevards that police say were spurred in part by flashing. The nude beach in Bredene will be expanded in 2006 due to rising popularity, Mayor Willy Vanhooren said on Thursday. The mayor said he wants to completely refurbish beach post six where the naturist beach is located. Barrington resident Joseph Fletcher said he can’t believe anyone would take issue over naked toddlers at a public beach. Fletcher is the parent of one of two 3-year-olds that Rye resident Helen Hoffman complained about to the Board of Selectmen last week. Nude cyclists expose lack of bike lanes
Some bicyclists in North Portland were so upset about the St. Johns Bridge rehab that they protested by pedaling across the bridge -- in the buff. Coined the "Buff on the Bluff," last week's protest was meant to draw publicity to the plight of cyclists traversing the four-lane bridge. The cyclists want the Oregon Department of Transportation to consider striping the bridge with two vehicle lanes instead of four and add two bike shoulder lanes on each side. Dr. Kent Lewandrowski, an associate professor of pathology from Lexington, Mass., wants the upscale resort on U.S. 41 to complete the sale of a $149,999 condo he agreed to buy in 2003.
